A kitchen should work just as well on a busy Tuesday morning as it does when the house is full. That sounds obvious. It is also the thing most kitchens quietly fail at.

We planned the preparation, the storage, and the gathering as three connected jobs rather than one large room. The scullery takes the mess. The island keeps whoever is cooking in the conversation instead of turned away from it.

Three details to notice

01

The scullery doorway

Positioned so you can hand a dish through without anyone seeing what is behind you.

02

Island seating on two sides

The cook faces the room. Nobody is talking to a back.

03

The unglamorous cabinet

Everything that lives on a counter in most kitchens has a home in this one.

The scullery is where the mess goes so the kitchen can stay the room everyone wants to be in.
